The weather was good and the attendance large at the garden party held by the Presbyterian Women's .Mission Union in the beautiful grounds of Mr. R. McK. Morison yesterday. The function 'was held in aid of the mission funds, and those present found the afternoon pass very pleasantly. Several stalls were in use as follows:: Sweets, Miss Stanton; soft drinks and ice cream, Mrs. McKay; flowers, Miss Cbrkill. A short but very acceptable programme of musical items, etc., was contributed by Misses Richardson and Davies, Mrs. F. Dixon, Messrs A. 1.. Sharpe. If. L. Betts, W. A. Betts, A. H. Hills, Tissiman and North. The accompaniments were very capably play-» ed by Miss Evans. The kindness'of Mr. and Mrs. Morison in placing their grounds at the disposal of the union was much appreciated by members.

The weather was wild and wintry early this morning, but in the afternoon it improved a gTeat deal and promises to hold line for t'ho school children's entertainment this evening.

■ The county council hold their meeting to-morrow. It is not anticipated that it will take up any length of time. Several tenders for metal are to be decided.

The general committee of the A. and P. Association also meets to-morrow afternoon.

Tfie heavy rains of the last few days have greatly freshened up the fields. Although in the middle of summer, the paddocks look remarkably green and invit. ing—in great contrast to' further south, where grass' has a very withered and uninviting appearance. Ploughing appears to 'be general, and there are several areas_ now showing vigorous growth in green crops.

Now that the time for taking a poll on the street loan proposals is approaching, pu'blic interest i 3 being focussed thereon. A public meeting will be held next week, at which the Mayor will place the position fully before the ratepayers. The Borough Council meets on Monday evening, when the borough engineer's estimates, etc., and the works committee's suggestions will be submitted to the council.

Messrs Masters Ltd., the well-known merchants, have just let a contract for the erection of new business premises. The building will be erected in concrete on a section a few chains north of their present stand. The cost of the new building will be in the vicinity of £4,000, and will be an up-to-date structure.
