ANGLICAN CHURCH.
PROPOSED TARANAKI DIOCESE. MEETING IN HAWERA. . A representative conference of clergy and laity in Taranaki was held in St. Mary's Hall, Hawera, on Tuesday, to further consider the establishment of a new Anglican diocese for the province (says the StaV). The Ven. Archdeacon fl. Reeve, Wanganui, presided, and associated with him was the Ven. Archdeacon Evans, New Plymouth. The other delegates present were: Clergy, Revs. C. H. Grant-Cowen, r after mentioning thatV at "the previous'meeting held at New Plymouth, it Was decided the time was opportune and that now it was proposed to proceed further, moved that an organising secretary be appointed at a remunerationoorf r £2OO, with travelling expenses, for a period of six months.
A long debate followed, some speaker* maintaining that the time was not op- * portune for the creation of the bishopric, while others insisted that never was a scheme begun at a more auspicious time. Mr..G. H. Buckeridge said-thoy had to ask themselves two questions: (1) U tjhis movement from God! (2) Is this movement from man? If it was from/ man then they must fail; if it was from God, then they had to ask themselves: How much do we believe, in Godf If they, belioved in God, then they believed this this work had been handed dotfn io them from Him, and as God's power Was greater than man's, the work was sure to be successfully carried but. ' Eventually the resolutions were carried, with but little dissent,
Mr. Buckeridge was proposed as organising secretary, but that gontleman said he was not sure he would bo able to accept the position. If he could, ho promised to do his very best. Tlnj following were appointed an executive: Messrs T. C. Fookes (Stratford), W. A. Parkinson (Hawera), T B. Crump (Eltham), Stanley Shaw (New Plymouth), with tho Vicar* of Hawera, New Plymouth and Eltham. ■The Bishops of Wellington and Auckland and the Archdeacons of Waitotara und Taranaki are to be members of tho executive ex officio.
The Rev, Mr. Hands brought forward the question of tho readjustment of the boundaries so as ,to cither exclude or include all Waverley-Waitotara parish in the now diocese, and it was decided to allow the executive to go more fully into boundary questioti. At a meeting of the executive com.mittcc cubsequently Mr. Fookes was elected chairman and the Rev: E. L. Harvlo secretary and convener. Mr. Buckeridge outlined action to be taken, and arrangements wore made for a meetiii" <q be held at Eltham, at which mi:"' definite organisation will be arranged. *
