JUGO SLAVS.
THE PROBLEM OF THE WAR „ Mr. J. Cullen, ex-Commissioner of Police, has been asked by Cabinet to take in hand the Jugo-Slav problem in the North Auckland district,' which has for many months' past given the Government considerable food for thought the Wellington Times). In consequence of the repeated complaints that enemy aliens wevc< buying up land, especially farms given up by soldiers who had gone to the front, the Government took steps to prevent the sale of lands to aliens; but the labor problem due to the high wages demanded by these "Austrians," as they are popularly termed, under present war conditions, still remains to be dealt with, and with regard to this the Government has invited the advice and assistance of Mr. Cullen, who was for many years head of the police in the Auckland district. The Government has made provision for (lie naturalised Jugo-Slavs, whose loyalty is approved, to join the. New Zealand Expeditionary Force; while the remainI der may either volunteer for home ser- [ vice at prescribed rates of jjay, or enlist at Serbian rates of pay with the Serbian Army. A suggestion that the lastnamed should receive New Zealand rates of pay was not entertained by the Government. The question as to what is to be done with the Jugo-Slavs who do not volunteer either for active service or for home service, is one as to which the Government desires tg ( have Mr. Cullen's advice. . ."
