The New Plymouth's Boys' High School held its annual prize-giving ceremony last Thursday evening in the Good Templar Hall, and 'in the absence of the chairman (Mr. D. Hutchen) Dr. E. F. Fookes, the senior member of the Board of Governors, presided, and by special request of the Board the Bisliop of Auckland (Dr. A. W. Averill) presented the prizes. • TU dux medal was won by Brokenshire.

A very successful sale of work or. ganised by members of St. Mary's Guild was held'in. St. Mary's Hall last Tlmrsday, the proceedings being formally [opened by the Eight Rev. Dr. Averill, Bishop of Auckland. The stalls and stall-holders were as follows:—Produce. Mesdames Crooke, S. Shaw and Rawle; Liberty stall. Misses Crooke and A. Wilson; children's stall, Mesdames H. The Post's London correspondent wiites: —"A Glasgow correspondent, v.'iting to the New Statesman, draws attention to the ease of a qualified lady surgeon from New Zealand, who came at her own expense to offer her services at the beginning of the war. "The Army Medical Department excused itself on the ground that men doctors would not woik with women.' At lhat time also a hospital for New Zealand wounded was being opened in the neighborhood of T.owlnn. This lady offered herself as a resident surgeon, where she would have been. I believe, at that time (he only practising New Zealander, the others bein;; ex-eolonials or strangers, Hrr-offer wflfv refused because the London consultants would not work with a woman. Specialists of this type and the .Army Medical Headquarters are the last refuges of prejudices."
