J. llopkiys, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.] COUNTY COUNCIL MEETLXI,. ■NEW CHAIRMAN. ■Stratford, Nov. 28. The annual meeting of the Stratford County Council was held at noon. Present: Crs. E. Walter, 11. Worthington, L. Buskin, J. Mackay, E. Hancock, T. R. Anderson, .J. O'Neill, J. Ohristoird, and \V. 11. Were. Cr. Christofl'el proposed Cr. Walter as chairman. lie had a long experience with the council and would be a good man to look after the council business. He was sorry they had lost the old chairman and other members, but 'they realised changes must, occur. The late chairman had ever done his best on behalf of the ratepayers, as had the other two members.

Cr. Were stated he would support Cr. Walter. Ho knew that Cr. Walter would plav the same and prove a good man for the position. Crs. Worthington and Raskin also added their appreciation of Cr. Walter's work as a councillor, and would assist him to their utmost. ,

This being the only nomination. Cr. Walter was unanimously elected. In returning thanks, Cr. Walter stated lie appreciated the honor done him. The. council had done its best and would"* continue doing so. He welcomed the new members, and also regretted losing some of the old faces, but they had to bow to the will of the ratepayers. Tie could only promise to do his utmost, and .hoped that at the end of his term they would he satisfied with his work. The chairman said they would require five members to represent the council on the Hospital Board. The' chairman was proposed, but he said he would like a spell, and thought thev might have Cr. Were on the hoard.

Cr. Were declined. TTe had too many otber thinas to attend to.

The chairman said the 'board was very fair. They had no desire to persecute anyone, but it was necessary to have men who thoroughly understood the various districts in the countv. In the event of Cr. Were (inallv declining he would consent to re-nomination.

Or. Hancock said that from what lie could gather it was desirable, if possible. to have the members of each riding on tlie board. Cr. Anderson agreed, and thought they misht "harness up'' the new members right from the jump. This was the popular view, and' eventually Crs. Walter, Mnckav, O'Neill, Hancock, an.'t Mr H. Mel\. Morison were elected riding members to the hoard. Messrs Tyrer (schoolmaster 1 And W McDonald (member of school committee) waited on the council and de'ired that the council support the Education Board in the puprehase of a site for the new school Councillor-; were in svmpathv with the movement, and the chairman was elected a dclecate to represent the council at any conference that may k liTTd in connection with the site."

Cr. Raskin brought forward two or three important improvements required in the north riding. These were satisfactorily accounted for by the engineer Cr. Hancock said thev were very small matters, and lie did not desire that so much time should bo t.aken up in. these details. (Hear, hear.) The special order re lYafhapa road loan was confirmed, and Mr. Brown's objeetiem to same received. Culvert onpo-ite Mr. Harkncss' store js to be attended to. The dog tax was fixed the same as last year. It was resolved that in future the county council meet on the third Saturday in the month instead of the third Wednesday in-the month. OPENING QF TUNA FACTOKY. There was a crowded attendance of suppliers and others at Tuna on Tuesday evening, the occasion being the opening of the new Tuna factory. The opening took the form of a social in the iliring room, which was ermvded to the utmost. Mr. Skrdgewell, chairman of directors, occupied the chair, and stated if was a red-letter day for Tuna. The building was a credit to the contractor, Mr. J. W. Boon, and was put up in record time. The first pile was put in in the middle of September ani,l the building was completed last week. He felt the settlers would in a few years look 'back with pleasure and profit to their venture. ITe formally declared the factory open and wished the suppliers a. successful season. Mr. \Y. \aughan TTarkness. chairman of Tariki Dairy Company, congratulated the Tuna, settlers, and said they were wise in building the factory large enough for future expansion of tho company's business. ITe had inspected the cheese already made by the manager, and he could tell the suppliers they were in credit to the manager and his assistants, and he felt sure there would he no complaint as to quality. He also wished the suppliers every success. Mr. Davis, chairman of the Radnor Hoad Cheese Company, also congratulated the company, ami said his company had no regrets in going in for cheese, and he frit, sure the Tuna people would be satisfied with their venture. Mr. ft. P. TTarkness also congratulated the suppliers on the up-to-date premises. A ■ fine programme of musical items was contributed bv the following: Mrs. 0. Carter. ''Mary'' and "Mv Beautiful Lady": Miss Crcenhaush. "You and T" and "'Maisie": Mr. 0. T. Walters, "T.and of Tlopo and Clorv" and "When the front D;iy Comes": Mr. Rowe, "Uncle •Toe" and ! 'I l'orgct"; Mr. S. Ward, ■'Any 'Hags." Encores were numerous, and generously responded to. whilst the accompaniments l>y itrs. A. E. Burgess (piano) and Mr. Lester (piano) were up to the highest standard. A dance followed the musical entertainment, and this was thoroughly enjoyable, all stepping merrilv 011 a, concrete lloor that was voted "not, at all bad." Mrs Kownlewski presided at the piano, and Mr. C. .T. T.ashnm ably fulfilled the duties of M.O. The factory machinery was erected bv Mr. Alberlson. of Tariki. 011 behalf of Messrs "McMillan and Frederic. GENERAL. Considerable interest was taken in Ihe exhibit, of fat stock by the Ilawcra exhibitor. He showed one bullock that was estimated at, going over 200011)*. The beast was bred in Inglewood, and was a magnificent specimen of what Taranaki can produce, and wai only "> years old. A little preliminary, hardly anticipated by those present at the shov.\ was . skirmish between two Holitein bull*. The struggle was of short duration, but before hostilities ceased, one had his flank scored in several places. At the annual meetins of the Eltham

County Council, vim retiring chairman, Cr. ('. ,1. Belcher, was re-elected to the position, on the motion of Crs. Campbell and Pease., Cr. Campbell was elected council delegate on the Hospital Board.

That is the sole reason for not allowing goods out on approval.
