Word has been received in Waverley that Sergeant Laurie Strachan had been killed in action whilst fighting i»f Palestine. Advice has been received in Stfatfor4 that Sergt. H. Masters is shortly returning to New Zealand on duts Serjeant Masters, who is a brother of Mr. R. Masters, chairman of the Taranaki Education Board, enlisted with the main body. He haß seen considerable service, havfng been wounded. He was awarded the Military Medal. Another of Taranaki's old identities passed away yesterday, .)!), tho person of Mr. W. P. Martin, of tfltwoy, who died at tho age of 71. Deceased arrived in Taranaki with his parents in 1557 and servod through tho Maori war as a member of the Taranaki Riflo Volunteers, At the conclusion of tho war, ho settled on Smart Road where, after farming for 40 years, he came into town and established a wood and coal business, retiring to private life a few years ago. Deceased, who was the only child, married Miss Cherry and celebrated his golden wedding last year. He is survived by his widow and a grown up family of eight sons and four daughters, as well as 45 grand-children.
