ITS PROGRESS AND DEVELOP- | MENT. | Some idea of (he progress made by the dairying industry in ""Taranaki since the inauguration of tho co-operative system may be gleaned by a comparison of the balance-sheets of' any of these companies in the first year under tho co-operative tiystem with'one of the present time. The experience of Mangatoki will serve to ilustrate that of any other well managed concern. The first annual report for the year ending August 31, 1901, congratulated shareholders on (he successful results achieved. The total payment for the year was within a fraction" of yd per lb but-ter-fat. The milk received during the year amounted to 18,20ti,0,191b, with an average test of 3.80, yielding 702,7381b of butter-fat, giving 772,0951bs of commercial butter, overrun being 9.86 per cent., and taking 23.51b of milk to make a pound of butter. The total received for butter was £33,954 17s, whilst wages were £I4OO 13s lOd.
For the year ending June 30th, 1912, the year previous to manufacturing cheese, milk received totalled 25,281,8!) I lb, yielding 'J53.8021b of fat, producing Uoi.(J93lb"of commercial butter, the average test being 3.772 and the overrun 15.5; 2:. > .!HUi i,f mill; made lib of butter. The report stated that phenomenal prices Were received for two thirds of the shipments, enabling the, record of 12.55 d per lb to be paid out. Sales of butter had increased to £6 1,388 10s 2d, wages being £1740 4s (id. The thirteenth annual meeting report showed that 24,030,8241b of milk were received and from this 70S tens 17ewt of cheese were made from 5!>3,4221b of butterfat, and 185 tons lqr 111b of butter (including 14tons 13c\vt 2qr 151b of whey butter) from 351,58(>1b of fat. The overrun was 15.0(5, the test for the year 3.8(1. The pay-out was 12d per lb for butter-fat used for butter and 12.533 d for cheese. The butter and cheese sales were £57,171 10s 3d. Wages increased to £2713 Is sd. This year 27,012,0431b of milk were received, giving 1,032,8741b of butter-fat, at an average test of 3.52; 21,570,9241b were used for cheese, average test 3.73, yielding SI 1,0241b of fat, and making 057 tons 13ewt 3qr, or 2.631b to a lb of cheese; 5,422.1151b of milk were used for butter, making average test 4, yielding 221,05011) of fat, making 117 tons, newt, 3qrs 131b of creamery butter. In addition IS) tons 13cwt, 2qrs, Gib of whey butter and 40 tons !»cwt 2qr 101b of casein were manufactured. 'Proceeds of butter, casein and cheese totalled the fine sum of .€103,273 lis, with more to come, probably reaching £112,000, whilst the pay-out to suppliers will exceed Is lOd. The company has been fortunate in its officials, Mr. Jacob Marx (chairman) and Messrß A. C. Pease and G. Prcece having continuously held seats on the directorate. Messrs F, H. Watts (secretary) and K. Parrott (auditor) have also held those positions since the formation of the company, whilst Mr. C. Cooper lias been manager with the exception of the first few months.
