(From Our Own Correspondent)
The Urenui Rifle Club held its annual ball on the 7th irißtant, and it was one of the most successful functions ever held in the village. The weather was perfect, and the atmosphere chilly enough to create a desire for dancing. About 100 couples took part, and the Now 'Plymouth Wounded Soldiers' fund will benefit to the extent of approximately £ls. The music was supplied by Miss Hicks (piano), Mr. L, Newton (violin), Mr. W. Skelton (cornet), Master G. Newton (violin), and Mr. G. Gauatad (violin), and extras played by Mrs. C. Isaacs, of Waitara. were very much appreciated, Messrs C. Rumball and D. George officiated as M.C.'s, while Mr. W. Vincent, ps secretary, looked after all other details, and the. efficiency of these gentlemen added largely to the success and enjoyment of the lmll. Mr. and Mrs. Bullions, of Waihi, undertook the onerous duties of judging the fancy costumes, a rather difficult task in regard to the ladies, seeing there were so many artistic and appropriate dresses to adjudicate on. The. ladies' prize was awarded to Mrs. Butler (Swiss Britannia) of Okoke, and the gents' fell to Mr. tV. Vincent (Uncle Sam). It is worthy of mention, however, that the impersonation of Miss Rumball (France), Mrs Whittle (Ruination) and Miss Jackson (Dutch Girl) came in for very special praise; while "amongst the gents, Mr. D. George (jockey), N. Fulton (Highlander) and E. Rook (Huntsman) caught the eye. ' Those in fancy dress were:—Mrs Butler (Swiss Britannia), Miss Bannister (Spanish Dancer), Mrs. Burke (Gipsy Queen), Miss Crozier (FollyK.lire Ellis (Pierrot), Mrs D. George (Red Cross Nurse), Miss D. Gilliver (Butterfly), Miss E. Gilliver (Quaker Girl), Miss •Handly (Zingara), Miss Jackson, of Sydhey (Dutch Girl), Miss McCracken (Belgian), Mrs. Maclean, of Wellington (Black and White), Miss E. Marsh (night), Miss G. Marsh (France and England), Miss Mason (Quaker Girl), Miss Rumball (France), Mrs. Whittle (Rujination), Miss Weston (Daffodil), Messrs. Coleman (cricketer), Fulton (Highlander), D. George (Jockey), A. Gilliver (Scoutmaster), B. Marsh (Sailor Boy), E. Marsh (Chinaman), E. Rook (Huntsman), and W. Vincent (Uncle Sam).' The latter character was an outstanding "Stars and Stripes'' personality and Mr. Vincent filled it to perfection. The "Ball terminated at 3 a.m. and before singing the National Anthem a Hearty vote of thanks was accorded to all the musicians and to Mr. and Mrs. Bullions-for judging the dresses.
