FIRES.
DEVON STREET COTTAGE GUTTED, Early this morning a fire occurred in Devon Street West, as the result of which a five-roomed cottage, owned by Mr. A. Thompson, and occupied by Mr. H. Finclmm, was gutted l>y Are. At about ;i quarter to 1 Mr. Fincham, who was in the litmse alone at the time, his wife and family being away on a holiday, was awakened by breaking glass, and discovered that liis house was ablaze. The alarm was given, and the brigade were quickly on the scene, and though the fire had a good hold, on their arrival it) was quickly got under, but not before the cottage was gutteil and the contents badly damaged by firn and water. Mr. Thompson has the house insured for £IOO in the Victoria Office, while Mr. Fincham has a policy of £IOO iu the Guardian Office on the furniture. INCIPIENT FIRE AT THE BREWERY,, About lialf-an-liour previously, whilst going liis usual rounds, Mr. R. Ineh, nightwatchman, discovered that a heap of rubbish alongside a pile of case® at the hack of the trap-shed at the ibrevrery. Was ablaze.
