STRATFORD A. AND P. SHOW.

PEOPLE'S DAY. ■A RECORD GATHERING People's Day a.t the Stratford Show attracted a record attendance, and the Association should he well pleased at the "success of the IUI6 fixture. Notwithstanding a gratifying increase in the members' roll, the gate takings were well ahead of last year's reecipts. Possibly the splendid weather may have been partly responsible for the large crowd around the sohw-ring, but the main reason will be found in the fact that this, show has become thoroughly popular in Taranaki, due to the energy and progressive spirit of the executive and officials in caterng for exhibitors and visitors. This year's show was a decided advance on previous efforts, and the Association deserves ,the heartiest congratulations for the-.«'ompleteness of details, aiyl the excellent manner in which the arrangements were conceived and executed. A word of praise is also due to the police for the able, effective, and courteous manner in which the traffic to and from the Show Grounds was regulated. As the day advanced the crowd on the grounds presented an animated scene, the view of and from the grandstand during the horse events being very striking. The presence of the Kapon'ga Tpwn Band, under Bahdmastei Woods, enhanced the pleasure of patrons, their playing being very favorably commented upon. Some idea of the crowd could be gleaned from reading on the resultboard occasionally notices such as: "Found child in brown clothes.' Apply to Rest Tent!" and "Will parents of lost children (two names mentioned) apply at Rest Tent?" Undoubtedly the provision of this institution proved very useful in this respect, as in other ways. The parade of prize-winners in eattlo, horses, and vehicles made a fine display, the marshals, Messrs. A. Stewart arid W. Bailey, having everything up to time. Too mucli praise cannot be accorded to the president (Mr. E. Jackson), the secretary (Mr. W. D. Stanley), the committee, stewards, assistants, and everyone concerned. They all displayed untiring energy and businesslike methods, and were rewarded by achieving a success for the 101(5 Shew that will be difficult to surpass in the future,

JUVENILE JUDGING. The introduction of juvenile judging proved a great success, and Messrs N. Fulton and 11. G. Sergei are to be congratulated on the successful introduction of the work. At the close of the competition the lads were entertained 'to afternoon tea. The president, Mr. E. Jackson, addu-ssing the lads, expressed his pleasure at seeing them taking advantage of the opportunity of showing their ability at judging cattle. All the boys could not win the prizes, but they should closely watch the various good and bad points in cattle and try their luck again in the future, and thus ?s the years went by the experience gained would he useful to them and their neighbors, and of great assistance to agricultural shows. He also extended his best wishes to the promoters of the competition. Messrs Fulton and Sergei. Mr. Griffiths, who is a 'keen judge of the Jersey type of dairy cow, will not have His task of adjudging the winners completed until the ejid of the week. The result will be published in Monday'B issue.

HORSES. Judging of the rest of the horse events wns proceeded with briskly, and by noon' al! were completed. There were some splendid draughts shown. In stallions, ■I. Knight's Knight of the Garter gained championship, with J. D. Mitchell's Martin Baron reserve. The judge of the light horses considered that both saddle and harness classes were very creditable, the ponies being particularly so. In fact, ponies were the best he had seen for many years.

THE COMPETITIONS The competitions on the second day proved very interesting. The jumping was good, especially over the water, and there war, plenty of variety in the programme, which, however, proved rather lengthy, the majority of the crowd having departed before the last event was got through, though Mr-. D. Malone, in charge of the ring, allowed no delays between the events. A feature of the day was the performance put up by Mr. Leo O'Neill's Mae. The Urenui horse gave a well-nigh faultless exhibition, winning both the hunters' and steeplechase competitions, with Mr. D. Stockman in the saddle, and scoring also in the hunters' competition open to horses'owned and ridden by Hunt Club members. Mr. D. Stockman also won in the open rider's competition. Mr. E. Short's Scout, ridden by Mrs. Eecker, won the ladies' hunters competition. One of the judges, Mr. McGregor, of Wanganui, considered that the jumping was very good. The riding of the boys in the pony events also came in for commendation. He suggested that some of the events should be got off on the first day, as in some- eases judgment had to be given very hurriedly.
