A DESERTER'S IDENTITY* Masterton, August 25. l.otters which luve been received in Carterton and Masterton indicate that the soldier wli.o deserted from the New Zealand troops in France and want over to the Germans belonged to Carterton. Hia parentß are Germans, and live near the town of Carterton. The letters show that Wairarapa men are keenly distressed over the occurrence, and especially the Carterton soldiers, who are savage over the trea> amiable act One Carterton soldier states I L e - er he fal ' 9 into the hands ot the Wairarapa men the deserter will be cut to pieces. The man ig considered to have given valuable information to| the enemy, through which several Wan rarapa men have fallen victims to <3eri man snipers. A Carterton farmer states that the deserter worked for him and teemed ft decent fellow. After having been in camp for some time, he became very enthusiastic over the war, and remarked that as a New Zealander, he was read}! to settle "any damn German he ran up against at the war." The letter a all mention the name of the deserter. •
