UNDER AN OPERATION. An inquest wag hold at the Courthouse yesterday, before Mr. A. Crookc, Coroner, concerning the death of an infant, Keith Nelson Emerre, aged 22 months, who died during the course of an operation at the New Plymouth hospital on Monday evening. Bernard George Emerre, commercial traveller, father of thi! child, said that deceased had been a perfectly healthy child since birth, but took ill on Sunday night, about I'2 o'clock. Dr. -Wade was called in, and on Monday morning ordered the removal of the child to the hospital.

Dr, Wade deposed to being called to attend the child, and he at once saw that the infant was suffering from a serious bowel complaint. Ho ordered the boy's removal to the hospital. s The operation was commenced about 10 o'clock, Drs. Walker and Fookes operating. Five minutes after the administration of the anaesthetic, which the child took fairly well, the child appeared to be in a state of shock, and died while the operation was in progress. The anaesthetic used was one part chloroform and two of ether for the inductions; pure ether to be used for the remainder of the operation. The cause of death ivaa due to heart failure, brought about by the shock of the operation and the condition of the child. There was no hope of the child living unless an operation was performed. Dr. Walker said that the child's condition when lie saw him was one of the greatest gravity and an operation was the only chance of saving life. An anaesthetic was therefore administered and as witness was proceeding with the preliminary steps the childfe condition became very bad, respiration failing. All efforts were made to resuscitate the child 'but without avail. Examination showed that there were grave abdominal conditions which would have terminates, fatally within a short time. The Coroner recorded a formal verdict, in accordance with the medical evidence, that death was due to heart failure, caused by intus-susception of the bowels, and that everything possible had been dontv
