RUSSIANS CONVERGING ON HAEICZ. Received August 15, 9.30 p.m. 'Petrograd, August 1&. xv o\v that General Bothmer, after stubbornly holding his winter lines for ton weeks, has been compelled to fall back ander the menace to liis flanks, interest centres on his chances of avoiding disaster. Some quarters consider a second Sedan is possible, but there is no sign thereof. The retreat has been delayed, but is orderly thus far. General Bothmer has proved a clever general, and it is unlikely that he held on over-long, in view of the steady Russian progress on his wings. One of General Pflanzer's forces is retiring north-west from Stanislav in an endeavor to cover Bothmer, who has the Tarnopol and Lemberg railway behind' him, also good roads. Moreover three parallel rivers protect his southern flank. Much depends on the enemy's ability to hold Halicz and enable Bothmer's centre to make a good retreat. The Russians are converging on Halicz in three directions. It now appears that the allusion made in a German communique, on August 11, to a re-grouping of troops in order to meet the Russians' altered dispositions, was a method of preparing Germany for the news of Bothmer's retreat; but communiques have not vet mentioned that the retreat has been in full swing for a couple of days.
