BOROUGH COUNCIL (l'i'om Cur Own Correspondent.) Stratford. Yesterday. At the monthly meeting of the Council i n Monday evening IS. \V. Hancock wrote resigning his position as a councillor. Lieutenant Gray wrote regarding £5 17s lid, amount handed to him by Sergt.Major Dalljngcr for the Senior Cadet band. As,there was no'possibility of a cadet band being formed in Stratford, lie suggested the amount should be handed > to the school fife end drum band.— Agreed to. Three ratepayers in Portia street south drew the. Council's attention to the state of the footpath. The engineer is to give an estimate of the cost of the work. ABATTOIRS MANAGER'S REPORT. Tha, manager, A, M. Spillman, reported that during the month of .inly Cfi cows, 48 heifers, 1 calf, 245 sheep, pigs had. been killed. Nine head of euule were wholly or partially condemned. Fees amounted to £54 14a 3d. The inspector was authorised to report on the sanitary condition of premises in Broadway North. The matter of repairs and renewals to the Fire Brigade Station was the hands of the Fire Brigade Committee, with power to act. Cr. Mills thought that some action should he taken regarding the state of the salcyards. He considered they were a disgrace to the town and tne Council should take some action in the matter. Cr. Youag said no doubt the mud was pretty bud, but ho did not think they were insanitary. It was*deciued to instruct the inspector to report on the matter. A committee consisting of the Mayor and Cr, Thompson is to. report at next meeting on a site for municipal yards. The Works Committee reported that Juliet street between Began street and Fenton street he kerbed and channelled. A petition has been received from residents in Ariel street extension asking for c irtain work. We recommend that petitioners be advised that Council cannot legally spend money on the street in question. The filling on east side of Broadway between Seyton ?treet. and Pembroke road is nearly completed. We recommend that this be sown with suitable grass nt the proper season. We recommend that owner of certain premises in Opunake'road be notified to have his property drained in accordance with the by-laws. We recommend'that liispec- ] tor be instructed to prosecute all persons t | depositing rubbish within the Borough.— " ! BecPKijmendations adopted. , . I Constable McCowan, who was injureu j in the arrest of Rua, and has been on extended leave, resumed duty on Monday. On Monday night, for the first time for some months, there was a full attendance of Councillors at the Borough Council meeting. The Borough engineer, in his report to | the Council, mentioned that there had been trouble nt the waterworks during I the month, but not one councillor asked ! i> question in the matter, yet the Council speht some time discussing the question ijf kerbing a side street. It certainly looks as if the water supply is a minor j consideration with the present Council.
