Ha dragged a wounded officer of another regimwt to a temporary •shelter of hia own construction, where he had previously bandaged four wounded. Ho heard .calls from the adjutant of his own regiment, who was severely wounded within a huni dred yards of the enemy. It seemed certain death to venture out, but Lala insisted. He went anil offered to crawl back wifli the adjutant on his back, but this was not ipermitttd, and he stripped to keep the adjutant warmer. He remained until dark and then returned to the shelter and car-. ried the first officer to the main trenches. He returned with a Btretehen on his back and carried the adjutant. The War Office describe* the deed as a magnificent example of courage mi devotion.
