Tire Tmlralema, from Brisbane, averaged only five knots an hour for, the voyage. She shipped heavy seas when off Cape Maria Van Diemen. The steering chains carried away, and the Vessel drifted for an hour until repairs were effected. The Wallsend, from New Plymouth, also had a tempestuous parage. ' On Wednesday a heavy sea struck the ship, smashing the hand steering gear aft', and flooded and ripped the lining from the engineers' quarters aft. The Warrimoo, from Napier, had to put to sea when discharging at that port, and brought on GOO tons of Hawkes Bay cargo to Auckland. " • MISHAP TO ARAtIURA. fSisbome, Yesterday. . There is no sign yet-of the Arah'ura, and there is difficulty in comlnnnicßting with the coast, the wires being (Wn north of Tolftga Bay. The manager of the Union Company has received the following message from the Auckland office: "Received the following telegram from the captain of the Aralmra: 'Have put in at Cape Runaway; ship leaking; nine feet of water in toreholdsj unable tu find leak, but pumps have got tfater under; expect to continue vovngc to Gisborne to-night (Sunday). There 1« considerable damage to otirgo. Am unable at present to get answer to wireless.' "

LATEST PARTICULARS. Oisborne. Last NisyJit. some concern was expressed thl* morning over the non-arrival of the Union Company's Arahura, which' left Auckland for Risbnrne nnd Napier at 2.10 p.m. on Saturday. Shortly after mid-day the local manager of the company advised from Auckland that the Arahura had wirelessed that she had sprung a leak, and was taking shelter, btit would bo able to come on to Qisborne. The vessel arrived in the bay at 2.45 p.m., all trim and apparently unaffected. s ' The Company decided to tranship all cargo and passengers here, and that the vessel Bhould return to Auckland for docking. She carries 400 tons general cargo, mostly sugar for Glsborne, and the sugar and a large quantity of tha balance of the cargo is badly damaged. On leaving Auckland on Saturday afternoon the Arahura immediately ran into dirty weather, which became steadily worse until, in the Bay of Plenty, a terrific gale with mountainous seas was encountered The vessel labored badly on Saturday night, and it was ascertained on Sunday morning that she bad sprung a leak, 'and. soon nine feet of water .was reported in the forward holds. Captain Drydmi deelded to run for shelter, and fetched up off Whangaparaoa (Cape Runaway), at mid-day yesterday. Her pumps were set going, and were found easily able to cope with the leak, the vessel rode out the storm, and left to come on to Gisbbrhe at 4 o'clock this morning, Some of the mails were badly damaged, mainly those for Napier. ' The extent of the damage to the cargo cannot be computed till the morning, when it i» also hoped to get at the leak. The Araluira'a mails and some passengers went on to Napier by the Ripple to-night. The steamer Ngatoro. which m four days overdue from Limestone Is* land, arrived this afternoon, all well. The weather has now cleared to a certain extent, and the swollen rivers are receding. telegraphic communications with coastal townships is interrupted, but no very seriou» damage % re«orted elsewlM*<n *•
