EMPIRE PICTURE PALACE. An entirely new programme of phutupl*}'= "'ill be presented rit tliu Empire Picture Palace to-night. The star production is a Lubin special, a sweetly pretty drama of romance and social intrigue entitled "In Love's Own Way." The story tells of two women. The man loved one, but having gained political power, he weds another. She becomes a gambler. How the Senator's, first love cures the wife of gambling and makes the home happy is vividly portrayed by such popular American players as Frances •Joyner, John luce, Mary Charleson, Clare f.liner and Josephine Longwortli; truly a powerful combination of art antl beauty. "Pathe's Australian Gazette" is a good number. Another good topical item is "Red Cross Dogs." The swiftness, the strength, and the highly developed power of the dog make' it a powerful ally of man. These dogs are trained to saye life on the battlefield. The popular Vitagraph actors will be seen in "No Greater Lo,ve,"'a tense story of immense dramatic power, whilst the comedy items are "He Fell in the Park" (Nestor), "Pimple's Scrap of Paper" (West), and "Mr. .Tarr and Love's Your.g Dream" (Vitagraph).

THEATRE ROYAI* ' "Up From, the Depths," a Mutual master-picture in four parts, is to be the leading attraction at thi: house for Friday and Saturday next. This startling play, which pictures the story of a girl's heroic life battle and a man's regeneration, was screened for a week at the Crystal Palace, Sydney, and so great was its success that it was continued for a fortnight at two other leading picture houses. The drama is founded on the old story of a girl's infatuation for a scoundrel, and it is said to be a fearless criticism of that social law which tramples upon the women who sins, but permits the other party to the contract, the man, to go free. There are said to be many strikingly attractive and realistic settings, a notably vivid scene being Mozart's Saloon in New York, set for the worship of wine. The critics who previewed the film have said that it would be difficult to imagine a better harmonised play, a more interesting plot, or one of greater dramatic strength and human appeal. Courtney Foote, in the star role, is affdrded an opportunity to display his talents. Charming Gladys Brockwell, as the girl who comes "up from the depths" to her true birthright as a wife and mother, is entitled to high praise. Supporting films include "Pathe's Gazette," a scenic study in "Bothaland," a comedy burlesque called "Pressng Business," and "The Sea Venture," two reels of intense dramatic happenings, this being the third instalment of the ladies' serial, "The Trey 0' Hearts."
