Native picked up a riflo dropped by Oon- " 1 stable Fahey, when he was struck by Horomona, and accused twice attempted to fire the rifle at Constable Skinner, but could not, the safety catch being locked. Constable Shearman covered mint but seeing that the catch (if the Maori's rifle was locked lie did not fire. Accuscd dropped the rifle and bolted, but he ' was pursued and caught. " The inquest on Toko Rua and Maipi was resumed this afternoon. Oon- ■ stables Rush ton and Rogers stated that they fired at deceased, and they believed that they and Constable Maloney killed them. . • . ; Mr. Dyer, S.M., said that lie sould not give a formal verdict, not having seen ' the bodies. Unofficially, his unqualified opinion was that the deceased wen) killed by the police in the execution of their duty, and in self defence.
