BACK OF REVOLT BROKEN.

•MR. BIRRELL'S POSITION. (Received May 3, 9.30 p.m. London, May 2. Lord Crewe, in the House of Lords, said that the latest reports from Ireland were favorable, and the back of the revolt had been broken. The Government hoped that order would soon be completely restored. Mr. Asquith, in the House of Common j, said it was probable that the House would have an early opportunity of discussing Mr. Birrell's position.

DUBLIN NORMAL.

FURTHER SURRENDERS AT CORK. (Received May 3, 9.30 p.nr London, May 2. A communique from Dublin says that the city is gradually reverting to a normal condition. The cordon is clearing some of the small districts. A small affair took place at Fermoy, where the head constable was killed. Otherwise Cork County is quiet, and the Sinn Feiners in Cork city have surrendered their arms. The remainder of Ireland is quiet. MR. BIRRELL RESIGNS.

OTHER RESIGNATIONS TO FOLLOW.

It is rumoured that Mr. Birrell (Chief Secretary for Ireland), has tendered his resignation. * Other resignations that are expected include those of General Friend (who is commanding the troop 3 in Ireland), Sir Matthew Nathan (Under-Secretary), and Sir Neville Chamberlain (commanding ithe Constabulary). A cable has been despatched to Mr. Redmond as follows: "A conference of the executives of the Australasian Catholic Guild and Irish National Foresters, representing ten thousand members, deplores the uprising of an irresponsible minority, and expresses entire confidence in and support of the Irish Parliamentary Party and the ultimate success of the British arms."
