PROGRESS IN HAWERA.
WHAT ENTEBPIUSIXG HEN CAN 1)0. Visitors to Hawcra almost invariably l'LMinirk 011 its businesslike, progressive appearance (states the Star). The shops, generally speaking, are as smart and up-to-date as the general average in other larger places, and the works carried on by the Borough Council give ample evidence of a determination to make the town a model borough. In recent years, too, solid buildings have been erected, and business enterprises been embarked upon which are not only a credit, to those responsible for them, but an evidence of the strong faith which progressive business men have in the town's commercial future. Assuredly tho town does not suffer from apathy on the part of its leading business men at any rate: on the contrary, they have shown a determination to move forward, and it is this spirit which has made Hawcra the very important commercial centre it is to-day. This is as it should be, for on the business prosperity of a town depends the prosperity of every individual in it, and to a large extent also the prosperity of every individual in the district. The men who are making Hnwera the town it is are also the men who spare time to build up and assist institutions, other than their own businesses, wliieh will contribute to the general commereiil prosperity of the place. This thought suggests special reference to the South Taranaki Winter .Show Company. . Very few people'have a proper realisation of what this company has accomplished; they do not realise that the annual Winter Show means a big thing to the town and district, and that the bigger it c«:i l:.-> made the better for South TarJnuV.i. The company has already a larjp* concrete. building in Princess Street, !m» the casual passer-by to-day, seeing; :,anie concrete walls and a' framework oi timber, would scarcely realise that this new wing alone will cover nearly a quarter of an acre of ground. The Winter Show has been very creditable in the past, but the directors are fully determined to make it a great deal larger and more attractive in the future. The forthcoming show will easily eclipse all former shows, and will occupy nearly an acre of ground under one roof. It will be kept open for five days instead of four as heretofore, and apart from those people who will come from outside in the ordinary course of things, numbers will be here to attend important conferences which are being held at that time. This means ?.a expenditure of a great deal of outside capital in the town, to the benefit of every one directly or indirectly interested in the town and district, so that it is quite clear that the efforts of the directors of the Winter Show Company are of first-rate importance to this town and district; but, like everything else, they must have capital'to carry 011 tlieir work, and we feel sure that, when they appeal to the public to take up more share capital, everyone, and especially every business man, will feel it a duty that' he owes to his community to sub--1 scribe liberally.
