The whale killed at Moeraki recently was first observed by Mr. AY. Hainpstead, a Maori, says the Otago Daily Times. It had come into shallow water —about six fathoms—to roll on the bottom, a practice to which whales are addicted in order to rid themselves of parasites, barnacles, etc. Hastily procuring a small "flattie," Messrs. Hampstead and H. Edmondson—another fisherman—rowed out and attacked the mammal, which was a short distance from the cliffs. The weapons' were a rifle, supplemented by an axe and slasher, in lieu of harpoon and lance. A dozen rifle bullets having no immediate effect, the coup de main had to be delivered with the slasher, which was used as a lance. In spite of the terrible wound* inflicted, the whale's enormous vitality could not be overcome for fully four hours, when it died from loss of blood, the sea in the vicinity being crimson for a considerable distance. Much difficulty was experienced in towing the carcase to Moeraki, but by "cans of warps, manipulated by two oil launches, it was at length successfully beached. It is believed to be a "right" whale. »nd is 83ft in length. IT IS THE DISTINCTIVE QUALITY. Of SAUNDERS' EUCALYPTI EXTRACT—its freedom from resins and woody impurities, its great antiseptic, healing, stimulating powers, and its safety—that prompted the highest medical authorities to recommend it as the only eucalyptus produced fit for ir.lcrnal use. At the Supreme Court iit Viitorin, a witness testified that he u».5 made much worse by a substitute which was sold as "just as good" as SAUNDERS EXTRACT, and his trouble (ulcer) was healed rapidlv by the GENUINE SAUNDER EXTRACT afterwards. In disease it is the drop which cures that counts, and the common eucalyptus which it fit for mechanical purposes, such as making varnish only, should never be employed as a remedial agent. SAUNDER'S EXTRACT can be used on tie most tender surface or internally with perfect safety, and when taken as directed will always benefit. KARBOL, sold in 6d, Is, and Is M bottles.—Sykes, Chemist
