THE RUSSIAN ADVANCE. TREBKOND PAXIC-STKICKE.v TURKISH EXCESSES. London. March 7. The Times' correspondent at Petrograd says that the population of Trebizond is panic-stricken by the fall of Erzerum and the remorseless Russian advance. Mussulman residents are fleeing in the direction of Karahissar, because Russian cruisers are cutting olf the sea route. ■During their flight the Asgaris and Turkish soldiers committed terrible excesses, looting shops and slaving civilians.

A Telegraph Exchange correspondent at Athens states that the lack of medical supplies, owing to the Young Turks' theft of Red Crescent funds, is causing thirty deaths daily amongst the Smyrna soldiers, where the officers arc unable to suppress a widespread revolt. It is expected there will lie a large influx of luglewood residents to New Plymouth to-day, it being their annual visit to the sea shore. The children will be largely in evidence. At a largely attended meeting held at Hawera on Tuesday relative to the recruiting scheme it was unanimously resalved: "That this meeting of the citizens of Hawera borough and of Hawera county is in favor of the Government's recruiting scheme, and will do all in its power to assist the Government with its scheme." At the last public service senior examination, Master Maurice Rogers, pupil of the Stratford District High School, passed in the following subjects: Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, general agriculture, and dairy science. Master Rogers' name was omitted from the published list of successful candidates. At Mangatoki last Friday a farewell social wis given to Privates R. Parsuns and T. Aitkon. A chest protector, large combination knife, and text book were presented to Private Parsons by the chairman of the Patriotic Committee on behalf of the public; the gifts to Private Aitken will be forwarded to hini.
