THE HOSPITAL.
A BUSY MONTH'S WORK. EXTERIC EPIDEMIC OVEK. The Taranaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board met yesterday. Present: Messrs F. C. J. Beliringor (chairman), A. E. Sykes, E. Maxwell. M. J. MacReynolds, D. McAUum, J. R. Hill.V J. Brown, A. H. Halcombe, D. H. McDonald and Mrs. Dockrill.
Dr. E. A. Walker, medical superintendent of the hospital, reported that the number of patients admitted during the past month was 72, and 50 had been discharged. The number of patients remaining in the hospital was 57, and the highest number of patients for any one day was 69. There had been 40. operations. Referring to the epidemic 1 of enteric, Dr. Walker reported that the remaining cases had left the hospital well. The outbreak had been of a grave type, but it was satisfactory to note that no further case had occurred. Otherwise the month had been very busy in all departments. Mrs. A. Bayly, matron of the Old People's Home, reported that everything had been progressing' very .favorably. The supplies had been very good, and the discipline had been excellent, with two exceptions. .There had been three admissions during the month and two departures. The number remaining in ■the institution was 2a, 29 ■ vales and six females.
■ ' ' PUBLIC HEALT& The inspector (Mr. A. H. Kendall) reported:—"During the past month I have visited Parihaka, Opunake, Inglewood, Waitara; Motunui, Lepperton, 'Moturoa, Egtoont Village, Okato and Rahotu. The notifications I received during the month included one case of scarlet fever at Lepperton, one case of diphtheria at New Plymouth, three at Waitara, and one in the Clifton county; one case of ■infantile paralysis at New Plymouth, and one case of acute anterior poliomyelitis at New Plymouth, proper precautions being taken to avoid the spread of infection. "I have disinfected eight premises among the following places: New Plymouth, Lepperton, Motunui and Waitara, and have visited and reported to Wellington on all cases of infectious disease as they occurred, and also on several other matters relating to the health oi the district, and also made full enquiries and investigations, and pressed for the very early burial of a deceased Maori during a large tangi at Moturoa in the very hot weather, and have also inspected the sanitary arrangements of several private hospitals in the district. "I have also visited auction marts, butchers, bakers, restaurants and several other premises in the district, as well as fruiterers, where food is prepared or sold. One prosecution for selling milk below the required standard resulted, after twe hearings, in a fine of £1 and £2 7s 6d costs; and two prosecutions for selling short-weight bread resulted in a conviction, with costs, in each case.'' GENERA j W. H. Sadler resigned nis position as manager of the farm. The following were added to the probationers' list:—Misses Margaret C. Fogerty (Auckland), Olive M. Paynter (Stratford) and Margaret Merron.
