OBITUARY.
' MR. E. J. GOTHARD. •■ • By Telegraph.—Press Association. Woodville, Last Night. A gloom.was cast over the races when the news came to the course that Mr. E. .7. Gothard had passed away, after a short and severe illness. He had been secretary to the Jockey Club for the last fifteen years, and witnessed its growtli from a small club to one of the most important in the North Island. lie was a popular official, lb is less than 3D- years since lie commenced practice as a solicitor in Woodville, He was formerly at Westport, where two of his brothers are living. He occupied various public positions, and had been several times Mayor and a member of the Borough Council. He took the keenest interest in all sports. He died at the age of 53 years and leaves a widow and five children, all grown np. One son left a week ago for the front. The second son Is in America.
