THE ACTUAL COST. , j By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Feb. 16. The Minister of Defence announced to-day that the Cabinet had reconsidetcd the question of the uniform allowance for officers in view of the increasing cost of material and had agreed t6 raise the amount from £2O to £25 for the infantry. The department had also determined that as tho sword ia now of no service that need not be , taken and this would save £2 2s. Ho ' would publish in a day or two a list of all articles, including clothing, necessary. Thus the infantry ofHccr's uriiouivt would be £23 ISs 3d and mounted officer's £24 18s Del. He was sorry to say that parents and others equipped officers \vilh articles wholly unnecessary, ' and which had to be left behind when going on active service. The Minister said that lie understood that in regard to mounted officers saddlery, etc., would be issued by the ordnance store. He also understood with regard to field glasses, pistols and «' pouches that theto, if not already gifted, would be. issued at the front, as is tha 1 custom with lilies, and must, like thetn, be returned subsequently. The new agreement dated from lanuary 1, ltllt!, but would apply to officers in camp at present and iu training for new campt or reinforcement#, even if they came in jn'iur to -ju unary 1.
