BOROUGH COUNCIL.
XEW WORKS DELAYED. XO LABOR AVAILABLE. The Borough Council met last night. Present: The' Mayor (Mr. C. H. Burgess) and Councillors L. M. Monteath, J. S. S. Medley, J. Haydcn, V. E. Wilson, A. H. Johnstone, W. A. Collis, W. F. Short, F. J. Hill, S. J. Smith, E. Griffiths, J. T. Mannix and A. E. Watkins. In tlie course of his monthly report, the engineer (Mr. E. 0. Clayton) stated: Fence at Waiwakniho.—The new fencing at Mr. Whitcomhe's property has been erected. This fence being entirely on newly-made ground, will require certain attention later on,-but as the property was quite unprotected it Had to be erected. > Tenders for Works.—Tenders for Barrett street sewer extension and GO'/, chains of kerbing on tram route were received. ■ ' Drain from Hine street to sea. —Replies from owners of property and the Railway Department re easements for this drain being laid have been received and will be placed before you for consideration. Starting new works.—lt has been found quite impossible to obtain any suitable labor for this work without taking men off the tram route. However, as mentioned elsewhere, construction work on the tram." route will soon be completed, and then a start will be made on the works ordered to be done without delay. Headworks. —The water was turned init.o the MangamAhoe dam last Monday. So far the foreba'y appea-rs to be quite satisfactory after the, repairs recently carried out, sund the.same can be said as regards the steps' taken to strengthen the dam and to stop the leakage. The report was, adopted. The Council r then went into committee.
