BUTTER AND CHEESE.

THE TARANAKI EXPORTS. VALUE TO DATE OVER £700,000. The complete returns of tlio butter and cheese exports from Taranaki since the season opened in July, are now available and show in a striking manner the important part which Taranaki plays in providing Britain's millions with butter and cheese. The approximate value of the shipments is £710,947 10s, while, for the same perid, the shipments from Auckland show an estimated value of £550,307, leaving Taranaki a comparatively little way behind the extensive and potential northern district.

The shipments from Taranaki have been made through the ports of New Plymouth and Pa tea. New Plymouth has handled 71,237' boxes of butter and 33,407 crates of cheese, of an approximate value of £400,034 10s, while Patea has sent 16,322 boxes of butter and 55,340 crates of cheese of an approximate value of £310,313.

The following table shows the quantities of butter and cheese exported from Taranaki this season, and the amounts the produce is expected to realise:—

FROM NEW PLYMOUTH. Steamer Butter, Cheese, Estimated boxes, crates, value £ a.

BUTTER FROM AUCKLAND. ANOTHER LARGE SHIPMENT. VALUED AT £104,000. The , which will leave Auckland shortly, will take approximately 40,000 boxes of butter. This shipment, the sixth from Auckland this season, is valued at between £104,000 and £106,000, the current London rate being 164s to 160s per hundredweight. The export of butter from Auckland since the beginning of the season, ou July 1, including the above shipment, now amounts to 242,349 boxes, of an approximate value of £850,307. During the corresponding period of last year, the total export of butter from the'province reached 212,318 boxes, of an approximate value of £607,100. The increase for the season is thus just over 30,000 boxes. Had more space been available on the the present shipment would have been much larger. The rate mentioned above is probably slightly beyond what will be realised, as latest advice indicates that the butter market is depressed, and that lower rates are likely to prevail in the near future. As showing the present high prices paid for butter, it may be mentioned that at this time last year butter was quoted on the London market at from 132s to 134s per cwt. In addition to the butter shipment, the will take approximately 5000 crates of cheese and 25,000 earcases of frozen mutton. The total consignments of cheese for the season amount to 13,294 crates, as compared with 5950 crates exported during the corresponding period last season. The increases in the butter and cheese shipments up to date will probably be accelerated as the season advances. The production this year is exceptional, and the output is being maintained, whereas at this period last year the supply was rapidly falling off.
