BURNED TO DEATH.
HORRIBLE RAILWAY COLLISION. By Cable.—-Press Association—Copyright London, December 17. A collision took place between a train from South Shields, laden with business men and workmen, and a pilot engine, in a fog, near Jarrow. Shortly afterwards a light train from the opposite direction crashed into the overturned pilot engine. The first and second carriages of the passenger train burst into flames, and the occupants were pinned down by the blazing woodwork. Ten were burned to death. The drivers and firemen had extraordinary escapes, being only slightly injured. A SCENE OF HORROR. Received Dee. 10, 5.5 p.m. London, Dec. 18. There were awful scenes at the railway collision. Twelve persons are dead. When the gas ignited the first three carriages horror heaped upon horror. Search among the debris revealed charred and unrecognisable bodies. One man, who was pinned beneath Hie wreckage, pleaded to be put out of his agony, and another, horrified at seeing the flames approaching, asked to have his leg amputated to permit him to escape, but despite all efforts ho was incinerated. Many of the passengers were munition workers, carrying itools, and they helped many to escape.
