The borough engineer (Mr. E. 0. Clayton) reported:— Forebay.—At the forebay the work of building a buttress was completed some two weeks ago, and we are now engaged upon the work rendered necessary to find the source of the leakage which has given so lmich trouble in the past; one serious leak has been discovered in the forebay itself, but there is another leakage, which we believe is coming from tin; Hinuel. At the present stage I am not able to say what the cost will be to remedy these. Dam at intake—At the recently constructed da in 011 the ' Mangamahoi Stream there is a very considerable leakage under same, and this also will have to be remedied or it will probably to serious results if allowed to continue. I should like the forebay and dam to be viewed as they now are, when it will be at once seen that matters are not very satisfactory. Old waterworks reserve.—The old waterworks reserve on the Mangorei I Road has been ploughed up and laid I down in oats for the use of the Council's | horses. Eleven and a-lialf acres have | been sown at a cost of £3O 8s for the labor, manure, and seed. Permits.—The value and number of building permits applied for during the past month was eight, representing a value of £1,528. Stock route. —A matter that will probably require consideration in the near future will be the matter of providing a stock route through the borough for stock proceeding to the new freezing works at. Waiwakaiho from the district lying to the south. Regulations will also require to be framed specially for conducting this traffic.
GENERAL. • It was decided to defer consideration of the engineer's report with reference to the purchase of a scarifier and Ilia engineer was instructed to make inquiries as to whether a scarifier could be obtained in Australia. Consideration of a letter from the Ngsmotu Beautifying and Improvement Society with reference to water supply to whares was deferred, and the Society was requested to submit the application again in March next, when the neit year's estimates are being framed. The borough engineer wa3 authorised i to kerb the footpath on the south side ,of the Breakwater Road from Ngamotu iSoad to Bayly Eoad at an estimated cost of >£7s.
