DISTRICT NEWS.
PUNIHO. (From Our Own Correspondents.) A progressive euchre party and dance in aid of the Patriotic Fund 9 was held at the school on Friday evening. The gathering was favoured with fine weather, and a good crowd of local settlers rolled along, together with a few friends from Okato and Tmnalm. The card games were keenly contested and proved very interesting. The ladies' prize was divided by Mrs. Gable and Miss McKay, the gents.' being won by Mr. L. Wells. The latter returned his trophy to be auctioned in aid of the Funds. Competitions, one for a sheep given by Mr. W. Thomas, and the other for a beautifully dressed doll presented by Mrs. P. H. Rowe. The former was won by Mr. Joe Stephenson who also decided to auction it for the Fund. As no one could guess the name of the doll this was treated in a similar manner. Messrs. L. Carey and F. Gable did the auctioneering and the bids, if somewhat small in some cases, caine very freely. The dance that followed proved very enjoyable, the music being good and the floor in tip-top condition. Mr. Percy Holmes carried out the duties of M.C. in a most efficient manner, and a halt was not called until the wee sma' houre had been taken full advantage of, despite the fact that the milking season, is now in full swing. The social was voted an entire success and muc-h credit is due to Mr. P. H. Rowe who organised and carried it through with the assistance of the usual willing few. After paying expenses and some other sums owing, I*4 was left to be devoted to the fund.
