An elderly bishop, who was exiled, at the instance of a Turkish commander, had horseshoes hailed to his feet, the Turk saying that it was impossible for him to go the distance barefooted. One hundred people were driven out, four abreast, with their hands tied, and barbarously massacred.. Women were outraged and exposed in the open plains to hunger and cold, while their children were bayoneted in their presence. Girls were auctioned in the market like sheep. At Angora and Nalikan over a thousand people were torn to pieces by the bayonet and nailed to the ground and disembowelled. There is every reason to believe thai the massacres were at German instigation.
