SOUTH TARANAKI BACON COMPANY.

A FURTHER DEVELOPMENT. I At the annual meeting of the Kaupokomii Dairy Factory yesterday, the , chairman (Mr. W. D. l'owdrell) inti- , mated that the South Taranaki Bacon Company, in which the Kaupokonui Com--1 pany at present held 2100 shares, intended to increase its factory so as to bo able to slaughter 20 head of cattle per day. It would also be ablo to manufacture manure. Farmers would thus derive considerable additional benefit. It would bo necessary for the company to take up additional shares. Some dis- , eussion then ensued over the fact that , shareholders did not support the factory . as they should, but took their pigs to outside companies. I Mr. 15. Bourke pointed out that the factory had proved a bouu by keeping , the prices up. He would bo satisfied to , get less from the co-opcrativo factory than from -an outsider, as it was the factory that compelled others to offer more to secure the pigs. Everyone should support their own factory. If their factory was out of existence they would soon know the difference. Reference was made to_ the fact that the factory at various times paid different prices, and Mr. Keppell suggested that it would be better if it was worked on the same lines as a dairy factory, i.e., pay an even advance on all pork received and distribute the rest as a bonus at tho end of the season, The chairman said'that there were difficulties against this. Ho favored tho idea if suppliers would be loyal, but he was afraid that many of them would be tempted by the straight out higher cash offer from other firms. A shareholder pointed out that whereas a milk supplier was fixed for the season a pig supplier was not, and could go where he liked. He thought those that (lid not support the co-operative bacon company should be penalised. After several present had urged that the bacon company should be supported, the matter dropped.
