Giving evidence before ' the Parliamentary Select, Committee.- .jm-.secret Ralph Wiirrall. alleged (hat the;, present- Police Act opened;' .avenues for' graft-- among the police,' who. are making a lo.t of money by takiug-nioney for no.t prosecuting houses of. ill fame. There, were any number of these, houses in.Sydney, but they were run secretly. Tliey really paid a license by bribing the police. He was giving evidence in proof of this statement, but it was pretty well known. Sydney, Sept. 2. i:Mr. Black, referring to Dr. Warrall's statement, declined to believe there was any -systematic bribery among the. police, who stood as high in the public, estimation as any force in the world. Suspicion, however, was not to be permitted, and he would fully investigate the matter. Dr. Warrall explains that he did not intend to impugn the integrity of the Sydney police, which he considered equal to any in the world. What he advocated was revoking the portion of the Police Act making brothels illegal, because such provision had the effect of increasing venereal diseases and exposing the police to temptations from which they should be protected.
