BOROUGH COUNCIL.
STORKS COMMITTEE. The meeting of the Works Committee on Monday night was attended by Councillor Smith (chairman), hi 3 Worship the Mayor, Councillors Burgess, Collis, Hayden, Johnstone, Mannix, Medley, Monteath, Short and Sykes. The letter from the High School Board with reference to •' the Avenue read drainage was referred to the borough engineer to report upon; Mr. A. Weller's letter re proposed work in Church Lane, Fitzroy, was referred to the horough engineer to report upon; the borough engineer was instructed to submit a plan showing the proposed planting in 'Nob's Line, and also, if so satisfied, to certify that the ordinary traffic on the street will not be impeded if the proposed planting scheme be carried out: the electrical engineer was instructed to 'submit a list of owners of signboards, and of overhanging trees which he desires cut back, and instructions were given to the borough inspector to serve the necessary notices and enforce compliance in due course; the draft agreement in regard to the hire of horse teams from Messrs Kyngdon and Doueh was referred to the borough engineer for approval or amendment; the action of the chairman in accepting the offer from Messrs T. and R. Parkin for the supply of crushed metal (2%ift gauge) on 'Devon road, between Watson street and Waiwakaiho bridge, delivered in such quantities and where directed by the borough engineer, was confirmed; Mr. H. Hancock's letter re dividing fence between the reservoir reserve and Mr. Weston's property was referred to the chairman to deal with; the borough engineer was directed to instruct the caretaker of the reservoir to use every care to prevent in future any damage to Mr. Hale's dam: the borough engineer was instructed to submit an estimate for the cost of regrading Fitzroy road, as recommended by him, and also to report whether the allocation in the £42,000 loan for this work has been exhausted; consideration of the application of the assistant-inspector for increase in salary was deferred; the explanation of Messrs Whitcomhe and
Tornhs relating to the charges for printing the by-laws to the marginal notes TO accepted as satisfactory: authority was given to,'procure 300 copies of part 6 of the by-laws dealing with vehicles; Councillors Oollis and Sykes were appointed a sub-committee to submit a scale of charges in regard to the following: (a) Use of public weigh-bridges. (b) inspection of fire-escapes, (c) license fees for rooms used for the preparation of meat (small poods) for sale for human food; the borough engineer was instructed to comply with the request iof the master butchers to visit tileir shops and to advise them as to the alterations necessary to comply with the borough by-laws; Mr. Skitrop's letter re purchase of a small portion or Mrs. Deacon's section at the junction of Cutfield road and St. Aubyn street was referred to the borough engineer to report upon; th« electrical engineer was authorised to instal such temporary lights in Kowhai street as may be necessary for the protection of the public during the carrying out of the tramway construction work; the borough engineer was instructed to attend to the follow ing matters: (a) To require Messrs Smart Bros, to raise their verandah, which is below the standard height, (b) to instruct the turncock to repair the leak water-pipes in Devon street central near Mr. Sykes' property and in King street, (c) to arrange for tramway contractors to remove certain poles at present lying on the footpath in Devon street; the borough engineer was instructed to submit an estimate of the cost of giving effect to his recommendation to have the water and drainage services on the tram route effected before the roads are permanently laid down, and instructions were given that in the meantime a notice should be inserted in the newspapers advising owners of vacant allotments to have these services laid down at once in order to save the heavy extra cost which 1 would be imposed upon them after the roads are permanently laid down; Mr. Skitrop having applied to be relieved of his duties, authority was given to accede to his request as soon as the borou;»Ji engineer reports that he is able to take the work over, and instructions were given that thereupon the <onstrtietion and supervision of all the works comprised in the .C2'2,000 loan, and ako the soltarrlng of the tram track, should be vested in the borough engineer, with authority to engage a working foreman as recommended by him; the borough engineer having intimated that the estimates for metalling and soltarring the roads comprising' the tram route were sufficient, and that he could carry out the work in a satisfactory manner at a cost within the estimate, he was authorised to lay the foundation of the roads with crushed metal or with boulders; the borough engineer wa.s instructed to supply an estimate of the quantity of crushed metal required under the altered conditions for the roads comprising the tram route; the Mayor and the chairman were authorised to arrange for Mr. Rkitrop to supply plans and specifications for metalling and soltarring the roads eomprisinjr the tram route; the control of the whole of the head-works at Mangorei from tile intake at the Waiwakaiho river up to and
including the forobay. was vested with the electric liglit department.
ELECTRIC LIGHT COMMITTEE. The meeting of the Electric Light Committee, which followed, was attended by Councillor Montcath ('chairman;, his Worship the Mayor, Councillor; Burgess, Ilayden, Smith and ffykes.
