The Maidstone Ked Cross Society lias arranged to bake bread in Switzerland and send it to prisoners in Germany, as consignments from England become uneatable.
Acting on the Pope's instructions, Cardinals Gibbons, Farley and O'Connell will assume the initiative for a meeting of cardinals and bishops in Switzerland to devise the best means of securing peace. Spain and Holland will be represented and America -has promised moral diplomatic support. The 'King has visited the New Zealand Hospital. The committee is arranging for 120 more beds. There are applications from 2-10 men and only lIS can be accommodated at present. Herr Lissauer, writing to the Tageblatt, agrees that his "Hymn of Hate" was not intended for children. He often urged its exclusion fiom school books. It was written under the passionate impulse of the first weeks of war. Amsterdam, August 13. Victor von Blcichroder, a son of the famous German banker, has been killed in action at Warsaw, Bleiehroder was once secretly engaged to the Princess of Saxe Weimar, who committed suicide in 1013 owing to her father's opposition to the marriage. The Germans have established three asphyxiating bomb factories in Belgium. The German authorities advise all German civilians in Belgium to repatriate themselves with a view to escaping suffering .during the winter. Sydney. August 13. Charles Jackson, a social orator, has been sentenced to three months' imprisonment for making statements likely to prejudice recruiting. The shareholders' lists in the Broken Hill Proprietary, and Mount Morgan mines show very few Germans. This has disposed of the claim of Heiir Raor, head of the Morton Company, that the majority of .-.hares in the two companies were held by Germans. Melbourne, August 14.
The Inter-State Conference decided to abolish border restrictions and to faciljtate the transportation of wheat. The conference dismissed the chartering of vessels for carrying exported wheat. The net profit of the Broken Hill Proprietary fbr the half-year ended Mav 31 was £190,227.
