THE MEM m ACTION. » SOME PERSONAL SKETCHES. Private S, J. Griffiths (who has been wounded) is the youngest son of Mr. W. Crlfltths, of New Plymouth. On leaving school he entered the Bank of New South Wales, and after serving some years in the local branch he was transferred to Australia returning a year or two ago to Die New Plymouth office in the capacity of teller. He is very popular here with all who know him. Private P. V. W. West (reported wounded) is the r.ccond Ron of Mr. J. W. West, of New Plymouth, and Is well kne-.vn throughout the district. He was a keen footballer and was also prominent in the amateur boxing ring. For some years he was an assistant with Mr. B. 11. Chaner, dentist, of New Plymouth, and two or three years ago he went to Hawcra, from which town ha enlisted. - •
Corporal Alfred. C. Whitham, one of the wounded in action at the Dardanelles, is the eldest son of Mrs. Robert C. Whitham, of The Bungalow, and grandson of 'Mr. ,T. TC. Boon.
Private A. W. Sutton, reported wounded, belongs to Hnwora, and is a son of the late Mr. 11. W. Sutton, of Hawera.
Lieutenant C. B. Stuart-Mentcath vmt a son of Mr. A. (A. Stuart-Mentearth, one of Wellington's best-known lawyers. He was born in Wellington on March 5, 1892, and before going away with tbc New Zealand forces he was engaged in farming with Mr. K. E. Beckett, of .Hanaii. He was Bingle, and was a memiber of the A Company, 7th 'Regiment, and served in the Hunterville Mounted Rifles for twelve months. Captain Ateo Frandi was well known in Wellington, and formerly commanded No. 31 Company (Wellington) Senior Cadets, nnd for twenty-four years hn served in the Volunteers and the Territorials. Captain Frandi wa» born at Pisa, Italy, on May 4, 1874. He was single.
Private E. J. Fryday, who has died of ■wounds, was a son of Mr. B. F. Fryday, of Ngaere. At a meeting,of the Stratford Borough Council last night, Private Fryday's death was referred to. , It was stated that he was the first Stratford man to lose his life in the .present war, nnd a resolution of sympathy with Mr, and Mrs. Fryday was carried. Private G. Knight and Private Horton, who have been wounded, came from Stratford.
The lists of casualties in the Dardanelles are bringing the war homo to our doors (says the Eltham Argus). Corpl. T. W. Narbey, well-known in Eltham as an enthusiastic territorial, is amongst the wounded. Another young man amongst the wounded, who was also well-known in town, was N. B. Howell, who was manager of the local branch of the Melbourne Clothing Company. Mr. R. Green, of Eltham, has received new» of his son Gerald being wounded. Private E. ,T. Fryday, of Ngaere, is also included in the list published on Saturday. Amonst tbc Canterbury list published to-day is Private F. M. Flavell, son of Mr. Sydney Flavell, of Rotokare road. Private A. B. Morshead, reported wounded, is the youngest son of Mrs. J. W. Morshead, lute of New Plymouth, now residing in Hawera. For two seasons he acted as Bccond assistant at Haveloek Cheese Factory, returning to New Plymouth each winter to join the stall of the Morshead Nursery Co. He was a member of the Tuknpa senior football team.
