BIBLE IN SCHOOLS.
EVIDENCE BEFORE COMMITTEE. By Telegraph.—Per Press Association. Wellington, October 16. The Education Committee continued tailing evidence upon the Bible in Schools question this morning. The ci'oss-exaininaliioji of Mr CaugMey wals continued by Canon Garland and Professor Hun'.ier. Witness remained unshaken in 'his opposition to the league' system. Mr D. 0. Batts, an ex-Okuroh of England clergyman, (said he had' had experience of the New South WalHa system of Bible instruction and tihoughti it a failure and a reproach to clergymen. He was of opinion that the majority of teachers were opposed to religious teaching in schools, and I(hat it would lead to dismissals and persecutions. Schools Should mot bo used as a recruiting ground for the churches. The church was the distinctive place for religious instruction. It was wrong to attempt to capture tlhe school to teach what ministers and parents failed to impart. The Stale should in no way interfeiv with religion. He deprecated the attempt to influence members of Parliament, and was opposed to matters of rcl'gion being submitted to a pl&biscite.
