BRITISH STEAMERS LACK BRITISH SUPPORT. RATE WAR MAY BE AVOIDED. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Received 4, 11.45 p.m. London, June 4. Mr. Owen Phillips, interviewed regarding the Anglo-German negotiations respecting the New Zealand trade, declared that it was only an incident in a world-wide state of affairs. He complained that whereas the German nation hacks German shipping, the British shipping was not backed similarly by the British public, which had too long been hypnotiaed by the German naval, or really the German commercial, voracity, which had created 'her navy. ■Mr. Potter, the Shaw, Savill and Albion Co.'s manager, states that the British lines trading to New Zealand, and acting in complete concert, hoped that delicate negotiations would soon make «, conference with the Germans possible, thereby rendering a rate war impossible. THE GERMAN COMPANIES' PLANS. Received 4, 8.45 p.m. Sydney, June. 4. The general manager of the Norddeutschcr Lloyd and the general agency of the German-Australian Steamship Co. have received cable advices that thei. respective head offices have decided to start a regular direct line from Continental ports to New Zealand, beginning in July next, and maintain alternatively four-weekly sailings. They also advise that the British and.German steamship lines are conducting negotiations regarding amicable co-operation.
