CONGRATULATIONS.
Congratu'-'ilioiw to the New Plymouth High .Sclwol upon its performance in tin' iSchooU of I he Kmpire shooting eom-pt-titioii. To Iwvc secured second place in a con'petition ojn-n to all the schools of the Empire is a most creditable achievement. They were hut one point behind the CliarLerhouse School, one of the lending public schools of Britain, and noted for its shooting' prowess, and, as may be seen from the score* published elsewhere, the New Plymouth school was unfortunate in one of its best shooting boys breaking iown through no fault of his own. The achievement 13 all the more pleasing, coming after tbn> praise bestowed the . other day or, the No. g company of the High School cadets by General Sir laa Hamilton. A greater compliment could hardly have been paid or a better advertisement given tha school. The two things (show that I he school i'i well tothe front 011 the physical side, and. the examination venull* testify to the eflt««y 01 the scholastic teaching. This j part of the work of the school cannot J be re-modelled and brought up-ty-dute in j a year or (wo ; it i-i years before the full client of leaching is manifested, but then? is ample evidence already that the school under UlO management of Mr. Move:-: is rapidly "making good,"' and has a splendid future before il. It i» nccc-isarv. of course, that the master should be supported by llle Hoard 01' (loveniors, and it i« fair to them to say that they have-done a good deal to'help the master, but much still remains to be done. Extensions are urgently required, and these take money,- but, whatever happens the school must not be stalled. 11. should be kept moving ahead. this is done, the. school will soon be to Taranaki what the Wanganui Collegiate school and Nelson ■College are to their respectiro districts. The constitution of tin. Hoard is as undemocratic as it can be, and should be altered. Then some younger and liver men ; might have a chance of helping in direct- ; iug the destinies of this yery important ' institution. It is too much to expsat
the present Board to show that enterprise and vigor that the occasion calls for and which are essential to tho future success of U>e school.
