FARMERS' UNION CONFERENCE.
VARIOUS REMITS. The annual conference for the Wellington provincial district of the Xew Zealand Fanners' Union will be held at Wanganui on Tuesday aud Wednesday, May 20 and 27. The following are some of the. principal remits:— Local Government —Wanganui: ''That ill framing the proposed Local Government Bill the Government be urged to take .sole charge of the construction and maintenance of arterial roads." Timii: "That the scope oi the Local Government Bill be such as to enable local bodies to declare a district oven' which to strike a rate for subsidising' medical men working in outlying jiortions of that district." Harbor Boards.—Masterton: ''That owing to complaints of the damage to our products through obsolete methods l and machinery employed at New Zealand ports, the harbor boards be urged to remedy this state of affairs as soon as possible." Gladstone: "That the country districts have more representation on the harbor boards of New ZeaI land."
Railways.—Eketahima, Marton and Waimarino: "That the matter of shortage of tructe on the railways be again brought under the notice of the Kailway Department, and the provincial executive be asked to ascertain the approximate loss to the fanning community in the Wellington district occasioned 'by this defect in the railway system." Waverley and Marton: "That the Railway Department be asked to remove the differential rate on imported timber, the same being a direct imposition on country residents as compared with residents near sea ports." Shannon: "That owing to the scarcity of feiieing\timber generally, and the long distandSs ,it has to be railed, the Government be requested to reduce the freight on such timber." Wanganui: "That in view of the large amount of basic slag required now and in the future for farming purposes, the Government be urged to reduce the cost of railage l>y one half." Malawi: "That the Government be asked to reduce the railway charges on motor spirits." "That the Government be urged to make all the most dangerous railway cross, ings safer for all traffic."
Motor Vehicle Tux and .Arterial Roads. —Marlon, Ekctahuna and Waikanae: "Seeing that the cost of the upkeep of the main roads is so greatly increased bv the motor traffic, a tax be levied on motor vehicles so that the whole cost of keeping the road* in good repair does not fall on the land occupier." Wiinganui: "That it be a recommendation to tlie (iovernnient that the money, or pari of it. derived from the racing in the Dominion be expended on the maintenance of the ma'ii roads."
Union's Membership.—Palmerston North: "That the Covcnimeiit be urged to take the steps necessary to limit the membership of all unions handling or dealing with produce to bona fide workers, and that in all cases the limit of workers on the hooks of any such union be reduced tn not more than 5 per cent in excess of the greatos 1 number employed on any one day in the Imsieft month in the year." Purchase of Milk.—"Feilding; "That it ii expedient that milk should lis bought not only on its cream test, hut also on its purity, and tlie (.'(inference 'ie asked to affirm same."
Union Land Agenov.- -I'ahiat'm: ' That in the interests and fur tile protection of farmers, tin- sale iVjid exchange of farming properties should be undertaken by that union through the agency and co-operation of each local branch." Territorials.—Grey town: "That the annual encampment of Territorials be held after the first week in •June, when the milking season ia over. - ' preference Clause,--Pi'lmerston X.; "That some action bo take-i to do awav with the 'preference clause' in industrial awards."
Laml Aggregation,—Rangiwahia: "That the (loveniment be urged to stop the aggregation of land.-; by restricting (he area to be held by any one pcr-oii."
