Senator liristow, in opposing the Panama Canal Bill, declared that the Bill benefitted England more than other nations. England had been the United States' enemy in her every hour of need since the revolution. The debate on the Bill is likely to be prolonged, as numerous amendments are forthcoming daily. Received 8, 9.50 p.m. Washington, May S. Senator Bristow, speaking on the Panama- Bill, said that never since the American patriots shed their blood on Bunker's Hill had Britain not rejoiced when America met misfortune. Never had her audacity been shown stronger than in the present demand for the repeal of the tolls exemption. Unfortunately for the United States, it had an administration temporarily in charge of its affairs which in sentiment seemed more English than American. It was astounding that Great Britain should ask the United States to incur the whole risk of building the canal, : and then give her all the advantages [ without price'. The Carnegie Peace Endowment had used its influence to slanj der its own Government and stir up strife throughout the United States.
