ARBITRATION COURT SITTING IN SOUTHLAND.

By Telegraph—Press Association. Invercargill, Last Night. A sitting of the Arbitration Court was held to-day before Judge Stringer, who was first welcomed to Invercargill l>y the Law Society. M. Pryor, for tlie employers stated that the carpenters? dispute had been settled, the Otago award being adopted with the exception of the suburban clause. The Court accepted this. In the butchers' dispute Mr. Glass, for the employers, said the Union was prepared to accept the Dunedin award, with the exception of wages of hawking carters, who wished to be placed on the same wages as assistant shopmen. In the case of slaughtermen, the conditions of wages similar to the Christchurch award were wanted. After evidence had been taken, the Court intimated that its decision would be given later.

The Southland branch of the Dunedin Journalists' Union applied for an aw'rd, D. G. Sullivan represented the Union, and Mr. Pirani the employers. Mr. Sullivan stated that ill conference it had been agreed that the Timaru award should be taken us a basis of settlement with the exception of wages of readers, to which the union took ex-

ception. After evidence and argument the Court reserved its decision. Judge Stringer eat at *ight to enable the proceedings to terminate.
