ID. lvrudis and J. R. Corrigan were also fined £1 and costs 17s. SCHOOL ATTENDANCE ACT. The truant inspector asked for a rehearing of the case against C. N. Rowe, which had been heard and dismissed last court day. His Worship said that such application should have been made by way of affidavit by witnesses, but as the witnesses wore present, and no objection was raised by defendant, he would allow the case to proceed.. C. N. Rowe was then charged that, being the guardian of Norman Agate, he failed to send him to school regularly. C. N. Agate, father of the child, said his boy had lived with Mr. Rowe for some fifteen months from November, 1012, to March, 1914. The condition on which the boy stayed with the defendant was that he should assist about the house, and be sent to school, Norman Agate, the lad in question, gave evidence that he had lived with Mr. llowe for some fifteen months. He assisted in the house, and also helped Mr. Russell in his stables. G. H. Pope, headmaster of the Urenui school, said lie was aware, of his own knowledge, that the lad had lived with Mr. Rowe for at least twelve months.. The lad also advised him' that he resided at Mr. Rowe's. In reply to Mr. Rowe, the father of the child said he had no agreement with him, but with Miss Rowe as to the boy staying at defendant's place. In cross-examination by Mr. Rowe, the lad admitted that he had slept for some weeks on end at the stable, and had slept there for some time immediately before going to his home in March. To the inspector: Miss Rowe arranged that I should sleep at the stables. Defendant said the lad was not working for either himself or his daughter, but worked at the Urenui stables. He did not think he had slept at his house more than half a dozen times, but often had meals there. The reason for the lad's having had meals was that he came along with Mr. Russell, for whom he was working. To the S.M.: The boy did not sleep at home regularly. He had not slept in the house more than half a dozen times since last June. If. L. Russell deposed to having stayed at defendant's house since June last year. During that time Norman Agate slept at the stables. He did odd jobs about, and had his meals at Mr. Rowe's. Had tried to get the lad to go home, but he would not go, and he eventually sent him home. flis Worship said that from the evidence lie could not hold that the child resided with Mr. Rowe. and dismissed the case. Miss 8011, who has been librarian of the Waitara public library for the past eight years, intends resigning at the end Qf the month. I
