DISTRICT NEWS.

TAIHKI. The Church of England Anniversary Festival was held on the Ist insfc, and owing to the efforts of onr new vicar (the Iter. Kempthorne), who was assisted by a strong and enthusiastic committee, it was a great success in every way. In the evening a parish tea was held, after which it was intended to hold a service in the church before the social. Heavy rain commencing at this time, howeTcr, prevented this, the hall being some distance away from the church. But in spite of the bad weather there was a large attendance at the social and dance, and a most enjoyable evening was held. Songs were contributed by the Vicar and Mr. Manning, which were evidently much appreciated, as were aUo the numerous recitations of Mr. Frewin. A feature of the evening was the playing of Mr. Henderson, of Inglewood, who acted as accompanist, and also provided the music for dancing which, was unanimously voted to be all that could be desired. The vicar, in the course of a short speech regretted the weather had prevented the service being held as intended. He, however, expressed his pleasure at seeing so nuiny present. In speaking on church matters, he pointed out that although St. Philip's Ohurch was recognised as one of the prettiest in the province, there was, nevertheless, plenty of scope for improving it, and that it was one of the first duties of a loyal churchman to make some effort towards beautifying the House of .God. The rev. gentleman made an earnest and eloquent appeal in this direction, and was heartily applauded. Amongst the ladies who assisted in getting tea and supper were: Mesdames %ard, Kilsby, Stephenson, H. Knowles, Hancock, D. Jones, Grossman, and the Misses Kilsby. Mr. B, Crossman acted as M.C., and Mr M. Jones as doorkeeper. Extras were played l»y Miss Hine and Miss Ida Walker.
