TUNA Despite the heavy downpour of last Friday night the opening night of our euchre tournament was an unqualified success. The residents on the road turned out en masse and the number wag further swelled by visitors froip outside, which taxed accommodation proTided to the utmost. SIR JOSEPH WARD ON DEFENCE. WHAT DOES HE MEAN? By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Tuesday. A large deputation of the National Peace Council waited on Sir Joseph Ward this morning and placed before him objections to the Defence Act and their reasons.

Sir Joseph Ward, in reply, said the scheme was not conscription as its operations were limited. He agreed with them with regard to having peace, but it mu3t not be forgotten there was danger, he would not give away confidences but in the past there had been a possibility of a raid on New Zealand.-
