MR. MASSEY PRAISES THE COUXTKY. FINANCES IX A SATISFACTORY POSITION. By Telegraph—Press Association. .Auckland, Lust Night. "I am glad to be able to say that the finances of this country are in a satisfactory position," said the Prime Minister, when speaking at Alliatiy on Saturday. ''There is no better indication," lie continued, "of the state of the finances of tile country than the position of tile I'ost Office Savings Bank, and i o.in going to give you some figures Which speak volumes for the prosperity of New Zealand and for the industry of its people. For the month of March, 1914, the excess of deposits over withdrawals iu the Post Ofiieo Savings linnk was £!)7,711. For the month of March, 1913, the excess of withdrawals over deposits was ,£7(i,(i2o. For the quarter ending March, 11)14, the deposits exceeded withdrawals by £2111,148, while for the quarter ending December, 1013, the excess of deposits over withdrawals was £73,'247. For the quarter ending March, 1913, the withdrawals exceeded deposits by £57,091." Mr. Massey proceeded to state how the recent 4'/ 2 million loan was subscribed live times over, a fact which Showed the high opinion in which New Zealand was held hy the people of England. "The Whole country sems to ibe « hive of industry," concluded Mr. Masscv. "The people senied to be eonlident in themselves, confident in their country, and, I am glad to say, eonlident in thr Government." (Applause).
