AXD TRIES TO END IT. XEVY PLYMOUTH CARPENTER TAKES POISON. George Main, an elderly New Plymouth man, a carpenter, attempted to commit suicide 011 Saturday night Lv taking an irritant poison. He will appear at the Magistrate's Court this morning to answer to the charge., and will probably be remanded uutil he has further recovered from the effects of the poison.

Young Main accompanied the constables. Upon arrival, the outer doors and windows were found to be locked, and there were 110 lights in the house. A door was unhinged and the police entered. They found Main in bed, apparently unconscious. On a table in the room was a bottle containing poison, and on a second table close to the head of his bed was a cup containing what was evidently the remains of the dose the man had taken. •Dr. Hinckley was immediately summoned, and resorted to tile use of 1 stomach pump, and l)r. Fookes, who subsequently arrived, assisted in restoring the man. As there was no chance of admitting Main to the .hospital without turning another patient out owing to the crowded state of the institution, he was further medically treated in his house. He was arrested yesterday on a charge of attempted suicide, and taken to the police station. It is reported tiliat the roan had been drinking heavily on Saturday, lie made an attempt on his life on a previous occasion, when he attemped to open a vein in his arm, and was charged before the court with attempting suicide.
