ENTERTAINMENTS.

EMPIRE PICTURE PALACE. The new programme to be screened at the Empire this evening includes another great dramatic star bv the mighty Nordisk Company entitled "The Stolen Treaty." It is said to bo even better than the "Black Chancellor," issued by the same company last year, and deals with interesting phases of Continental, court intrigue. The Nordisk Company themselves state that this is their greatest and most brilliant picture success, and all picture patrons know that they have a few to their credit. The supporting pictures are a strong selection, and another feature of the entertainment will bo the musical programme by the Empire Orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Gerald van Heck. Amongst the popular musical items to-night will be the violin solo '•lntermezzo" from 1 "Cavaleria Rustieana," with which item Mr. van Heck scored such a great success when touring with the "Get-Rich-Quick Wallingford" Company. THEATRE ROYAL PICTURES. Owing to the Theatre Royal being otherwise engaged, the pictures will not be showing to-night. To-morrow night the pictures again occupy the hall with a complete change of programme, which will also be shown on Friday night, at the matinee Saturday, and for the last occasion on Saturday night. POLITE VAUDEVILLE. That'competent-vaudeville artists are ithe highest-paid performers in'the theatrical profession is probably due to the fact that each performer or act imist be capable of taking the full stage and entertaining a large audience solely on his own merits. In drama, opera or . comedy, the author creates the situations, gives the conception, and the story or plot is frequently responsible for the success of a performer possessing little more than ordinary talent; but in vaudeville there ia no author to guide the ar j tist, and each performer is solely dependent upon his or her ability to amuse from some chosen special standpoint. The vaudeville company which Mr. V. M. Beebe will bring to the Theatre Royal for a season of four nights, commencing ou Monday, June 30, ia claimed to be the largest and most expensive organisation of the kind that has ever toured Australasia. Particular care has been taken in the selection of the various specialties so as to give the programme that even balance so essential tp perfect enjoyment of a high-class variety entertainment. Each item is distinctly different from its predecessors, and a glance at the long list of names of the various artists and acts is sufficient assurance that a real treat is in store for those who enjoy a clean, bright and catchy performance. The box plan is now on view and reserved seats may be booked •■ at Collier's.
