EXHIBITION OP2XED YESTERDAY. ' The first appearance in public of the Taranaki Arts and Crafts Society was. made last evening, when an exhibition was opened in the Rroughiuu Street Hall. • There was a very fair attendance of the public, and with wider publicity there should be more New Plymouth citizen*., ~ displaying interest in a movement that -• is deserving of every encouragement.. The object of the Society is, briefly, to- ' promote artistic taste in this district.' : All other towns of any purpose have, 'their art societies, the surplus funds of which : have been used for purchasing', English works of art or any productions Ipy local talent of exceptional merit.. Pictures pur'ejiased in this nay huve bee» the foundation of all the art galleries, with the exception of that of Auckland. .Xc'.y Plymouth is\,now following in the ' footsteps of other "art societies,"in endeavoring to give the town' a permanent." .art gallery. Mr, A. Mclnnes Bradbury was the convendr'of the first meeting, and is now, as secretary, one of the most enthusiastic and energetic members the movement possesses. In calling upon the Ven. Archdeacon Evans to open the exhibition, Mr. D. Hutton outlined the history of the S<k ciety, .and, tQticJiing upon- the present exhibition, said "'that they intended to> hold an exhibition every,year, to show works,which had been executed duringthe year. He mentioned that they hal I been disappointed in not having,j)c.u.themv artists better represented, the reasonbeing that the .Otago Arts Society were now holding their annual exhibition and instead of 40 works, promised only 2j> were on the walls. He explained that the pictures shown were not finished pictures; they were supposed to he done direct from nature, not touched up inside the studio. TBey were always anxious to get direct work from an artist, because it had little or no "second thoughts" put into it, no striving after effect or making -it a pretty picture.' (Applause.) /.. • .. , The Ven.
