Blackvvell won by four up and two to play. Abe Mitchell, a working man, had a vary close finish with Mr. John Ball, in ' the Amateur Championship last year at Westward Ho, the game eing "carried to the 38th •hole, Mitchell, who wasdorniy on ,the home green,- missing a four-foot mitt. At the close of last season Mi|chell joined t\\i ranks of the professionals, and a good deal of interest was felt as to how his game would develop with an unlimited amount of practice. His defeat by Mr. Blackwell, a veteran who, though a wonderfully long driver, has never been in the very drst rank, shows that as yet Mitchell is not in the class of Braid, Vardon, and Taylor. The Hon. Michael Scott, who won the French 'Amateur Championship ' last ,year, won his match in the third round.
